Cut and hung threads (sockets)

I have a build of GrADS with libdap 3.7.5 and libnc-dap 3.7.0 on two  
systems: linux x86_64 with gcc 3.4.5 and also on my intel mac.  
Everything built effortlessly -- nice work, James! That's about it  
for the good news.

Our first try to read grids from the COLA GDS for a Peru forecast led  
to a hang. Second try led to a hang even faster, but after 21 minutes  
the server came back to life and finished the request. Looked like  
compression was the culprit the 2nd time, so for the third try we  
turned off compression and it was very slow going, but no hang. We  
will continue testing and let you know if we can reliably reproduce  
the hang. We'll also try rebooting the server while is is processing  
a request and see what happens on the client side.
